BEIJING!
UN Fourth World
Conference on Women
A publication of the Women's Feature Service is now available in
the market.
The conference held in
Beijing in 1995 was the largest United Nations gathering, and is
recalled by women who attended it with euphoria, excitement,
fulfillment, despair, and frustration! For those who did not go
to Beijing, there are several questions: 40,000 women. What were
they doing in the capital of the People's Republic of China? Was
it necessary to spend so much money on a women's conference? Do
women, and society, gain from such an event?
BEIJING! tries to
answer these questions, and presents a diverse set of views and
analysis from a cross-section of writers, women and men from
Africa, Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, Latin And
North America. A reader-friendly record presenting the broad
spectrum of issues highlighted by the event, the book reflects
on the outcome of the Conference and its far-reaching
consequences on women and society.
